Engine Cleanup

Engine would overheat a bit after driving it for about 10-15 miles, so I decided to pull the engine and check the condition of the tin pieces. This was my first time, and why the bus sat for 4 years collecting dust.

For some reason this bus had a trailer hitch on it. With the stock 1600 dual port engine. Hmm.

It was mounted right behind the bumper to those triangular corner pieces on the frame that hold the rear apron in place. Not very stout in my opinion. Off it came.

Previous owner was nice enough to put a shutoff valve in the fuel line right after the tank.

Fuel pump is leaking. We dont want the bus to burn down.

Replaced fuel lines, pump, and relocated fuel filter under the bus right above the tranny.

No more fuel leaks.

Stupid EMPI header. I am still pissed over that.

Wonder what all that grime is in the bellhousing?

Engine compartment looks ok except for the rusted battery tray. Fairly common, I am told.

Aluminum intake elbows will just be cleaned up. Intake manifold will be blasted and spray painted.

Scrubbed the longblock as best I could.

Sand blasted fan shroud.

Rattle rattle rattle. Spray spray spray.

Some tin pieces were bad fitting aftermarket pieces and some were missing altogether. A trip to the junkyard yielded some good German ones. All were repainted.

Checked clutch and endplay. Still ok.

Replaced oil cooler seals and got it a new Hoover Bit.

Scrubbed generator pedestal and oil filler cap clean.

Patched up some small holes in the heater boxes with JB Weld. I hope it holds up to the heat.

More or less cleaner engine with all tin the way it is supposed to be. Except no heater flaps. Still need to find those.
